Father’s Day reflections

Fathers embody strength and guidance as we navigate through life's challenges. Their love and wisdom shape our lives in ways that words can’t really describe. As Father's Day approaches, we celebrate their impact, cherishing every moment and memory they have given us.

"A father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow." – Unknown

As a new parent (my daughter Margot is just over a year old) fatherhood and what it means for me has been a near-constant thought. So far, the biggest lesson is that not everything is controllable—and often the best moments happen when you relinquish some of the control. My daughter has made me laugh, cry, smile, sob and everything in-between since gracing my life. My Dad did everything in his power to provide my siblings and me the ability to explore what life had to offer, and I aim to do no less for my kids. I can't wait to see how she navigates the world, I just hope she comes back and shares her stories from time to time.

To be a father is to encourage and love your children unconditionally, and I have been blessed to have a Dad as astounding as mine. My Dad has always been one of the biggest supporters in my life. His compassion and love for others is honorable, as he’s always available to lend a helping hand. In 2011, it came as a shock to our entire family when he was diagnosed with Leukemia. He fought a long, hard battle through chemotherapy, and we as a family are beyond grateful that we still have the opportunity to celebrate him and his love on Father’s Day each year. He’s not just a cancer survivor, but an avid animal lover, grill master, and has yard work expertise that could put a landscaping company out of business! To my father— words will never be enough to express the love and appreciation I have for you. My fighter, my hero, thank you for all that you have done for me and continue to do each and every day!

Being a father has been so fulfilling. Experiencing fun times (and not-so-fun times) has given me a great perspective on life.  But the most satisfying aspect of being a father is seeing my kids grow and mature, with their own thoughts and beliefs but always being good people. And I couldn’t ask for anything more.

Watching my three children navigate their own paths and grow into smart, caring and successful adults has been the most rewarding journey of my life. All three volunteered with me for our local fire department. I’m so proud of who they are and grateful for what they value. Today we still vacation together and I’m excited about all of the adventures to come.

On this Father's Day, I'm reflecting on the incredible impact my Dad has had on my life. His unwavering love and constant presence have shaped me into the father I am today. He never missed one of my games as a kid and, to this day, that still means the world to me. Prioritizing time with my two boys, whether for the big milestones or the small, everyday moments, is so important to me because these years fly by. Putting my family first over the last year since changing careers has been the best decision of my life. You will never get these moments back!
